IC INFORMATION;
Characters Name: Athena Cykes
Age: 18
Canon: Ace Attorney series, specifically Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies.
Canon Point: End of Dual Destinies
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Orientation: Athena once expresses jealously at her best friend Juniper getting attention from boys, so she probably at least likes men. She hasn't expressed any romantic towards girls in canon so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that she's heterosexual.

History: http://aceattorney.wikia.com/wiki/Athena_Cykes

Appearance: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/Emmy19/Thenacykes_zps45d6db2b.png

Personality: Known as the ‘Courtroom Revolutionnaire’, Athena is a bright, bubbly and cheerful young defense attorney with little courtroom experience but great determination and enthusiasm. She may be a bit silly and get over-enthusiastic about things but she is a very hard-working young girl who wants to be a brilliant defense attorney and do her best for the Wright Anything Agency.

Athena is a girl who wears her emotions on her sleeve. She gets very excited at times – whether it is when she is investigating a crime scene to find the real killer or even trivial things like the long-necked lady and the two-tailed cat ornaments in the Fox Chamber. She even admitted to doing laps around the courthouse to get herself ready for a trial. Athena is just a bundle of energy.

When she’s angry, she is in a really foul temper sometimes scaring her boss and her co-worker and even threatening violence a couple of times (although she’s never gone with her threats).

Athena can be a bit silly in court sometimes. When investigating or in court, she can come up with daft theories (for example, she once theorises that the Alderman of Nine Tales Village was murdered by a mutant bird). If someone she doesn’t know very well hears her daft ideas when she is investigating a crime, they might not take her seriously as a defense attorney.

Despite her occasional ditziness, Athena is actually a pretty intelligent young lady – not only had she skipped a few grades when in Europe which enabled her to become a prosecutor at 18 (although this was also due to her studying a lot), but she can sometimes have good ideas. She correctly worked out that folding the folding screen in the Fox Chamber would make a picture of the door to the Forbidden Chamber, showing how to unlock the Forbidden Chamber’s door. She knows quite a bit about psychology – she manages to work out that Jinxie Temna being supposedly possessed by Temna Taro was actually her sleepwalking, due to repeated stress after she became a maid.

Athena despises losing. This is not to say she is like Franziska Von Karma and wants a perfect record, since she still pursues the truth behind a case. However, Athena is very competitive even concerning small trivial things – when arguing with Apollo that the ladder they bring to a crime scene is a stepladder, she proposes that they have a rock-paper-scissors contest to see who wins.

Because she is so competitive and excited quite easily, however, Athena can be reckless. For example, in Turnabout Reclaimed, Athena was so eager to investigate part of the crime scene that she ended up slipping and falling over! If she’s not careful, her excitement could cause her to have an accident or her getting too angry could cause her to get into trouble with other people or even in court one day.

There is a good reason for Athena’s hard-working nature and competiveness, however. When she was a little girl, her mother was brutally murdered and Simon Blackquill, a close friend she cared about, was the prime suspect for the murder. Because of her strange ability to listen to people’s hearts, Athena knew that he was innocent. However, her protests fell on deaf ears and Blackquill was declared guilty. Athena was so traumatised by the incident and even blocked out some of her memories. However, one day, Athena met Phoenix Wright, the famous former attorney who would somehow turn hopeless cases around. That meeting resulted in her wanting to become a defense attorney –if she worked so hard and successfully defended loads of people, perhaps she would one day become a defense attorney that is so skilled at her job that she would be able to overturn Blackquill’s verdict.

Athena’s desire to save Blackquill also explains her energetic and friendly personality – when she was a child, she was actually very quiet and withdrawn. However, when she decided to save Blackquill, she decided that she would no longer be depressed – doing so probably would not help her become a good lawyer.

Despite her perky personality, Athena has a lack of self-confidence which she tries to hide. She may have changed but her mother’s death and Simon’s conviction still traumatise her deeply and because of that, she is secretly frightened of the courtroom. This is not to say that she runs away screaming the moment she steps into court. However, she is still a new lawyer at the Wright Anything Agency and this fact is ingrained in the back of her mind, despite her boundless enthusiasm. More than once in the game, Athena has had a severe panic attack – she was pushed so hard into a corner that memories of her mother’s murder flashed before her, making her shake uncontrollably and severely doubt herself as a capable attorney.

Athena’s lack of self-confidence also showed when Aura accused her of murdering her own mother. Because of this and the fact that she had shut down her memories of her mother’s murder, Athena began to think that she really did kill her mother. It was her mentor, Phoenix, who managed to help her remember what had really happened and who her mother’s killer really was.

As Athena is from post-game, she is from a point where Simon Blackquill’s verdict has been finally overturned. Therefore, while her reason for her fear has now vanished and while I would interpret she is a little more confident in herself, phobias do not go away that easily, so while her panic attacks might still happen occasionally, they would happen even less frequently as she is slowly getting over her trauma. However, if it does happen in a Holly Heights courtroom, she would be severely immobile and incapable of doing things until either someone snaps her out of it – either by giving her a lot of encouragement to help her get her act together or helping her out of her problem (eg. Once, when she had a panic attack in court as a leading defense attorney, Phoenix Wright came into the room and took over as the leading defense attorney).

Athena is also a terrible liar. Any sad and touching story? She will get incredibly emotional but will deny that she is crying, even when it’s obvious, as shown when Apollo tells her about Mayor Temna’s arrest. Athena being frightened of the Temna Taro statue in the Forbidden Chamber? Nope, she tries to pretend she isn’t. And fails. Miserably. As I stated, Athena wears her emotions on her sleeve.

Despite her lack of confidence, there is one thing that Athena knows she is good at and that is her knowledge of analytical psychology. When she detects some strange emotions in a witness’s testimony, she will confidently point it out and then calmly analyse those emotions using her gadget, Widget. Phoenix had faith in Athena’s power and that is why he allowed her to join the Wright Anything Agency.

Athena may have her flaws and she still may have obstacles to overcome to improve as a defense attorney. All in all, however, she has potential – her power aside, she is just a kind young girl who earnestly wants to help people through being a defense attorney.

As a note, Athena likes to insert German, Spanish, French and Italian words into her conversations. This often irritates Apollo Justice.

Abilities: Athena has an amazing hearing ability. She can hear things from far distances and even hear the emotions in people’s hearts. When Athena was a little girl, her hearing ability was so strong that she hardly ever left her house – the crowds of people outside were too painful for her ears. While her hearing ability has lessened as she has gotten older to the point she can comfortably walk outside, she can still hear people’s hearts and her ears can still hurt if, for example, one tries to scratch a blackboard.

That said, however, Athena can only analyse the emotions when she has Widget, a gadget-pendant that she inherited from her mother. Widget helps by channelling the emotions Athena hears from a person on a programme called ‘Mood Matrix’. When Athena uses Widget on a person, the emotions that a person is feeling start flashing on the Mood Matrix (for example, if a person is describing their account of being attacked by a monster, the blue ‘Sad/Frightened’ emotion and the yellow ‘Shocked/Confused’ emotion might suddenly start flashing. This is useful in court, as sometimes witnesses display contradictory emotions during their testimonies.

However, the Mood Matrix is not a mind reader – it only displays the emotions the person being subjected to it is feeling. Athena has to work out for herself why said person is feeling a specific way.

Sometimes, when a witness feels a particularly strong emotion (for example, they are extremely frightened, angry or stressed or completely overcome with happiness), the mood matrix goes into ‘Overload’ mode and the Mood Matrix cannot try to detect any other emotions. Instead, Athena has to detect the source of the witness’ strong emotion (images displaying the witness’ testimony appear on the screen and one of the images displays the source of the witness’ strong emotion. However, Athena has to find out which image it is herself).

As well as being an analysing programme, Widget also works as a mood pendant in the sense that it changes colour to reflect Athena’s mood. However, it also talks and, because of that, it sometimes blurts out what Athena is thinking, which can leave her at a severe disadvantage if she is trying to lie to someone. Athena once got into trouble in court when Widget blurted out that she thought the prosecutor was an ‘arrogant jerk’.

As a note – Athena’s hearing ability and Widget gadget do not read minds – if someone evil is very good at lying and supressing their real emotions, Athena might not necessarily be able to pick their true feelings up and because of that, it is possible to manipulate her.

Other: I assume that Athena’s hearing ability (it’s described in-game as a power rather than just giant enhanced hearing) and Widget are temporarily taken from her? If/when she gets them back I will definitely put up a permissions post.

First Person: Guten Morgen, everyone! Just five days left - Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat and I am already pumped out for festivities! I have juuust about bought everyone’s gifts!

[And then she gives an awkward smile.]

Er……except for Mr. Wright, of course. He and Apollo have helped me so much when I became a member of the Wright Anything Agency and I wanted to give them something really special as a thank-you. I’ve already got Apollo some hair gel that I know he wanted but I’m not sure about Mr. Wright. After all, he’s my boss in the agency and I think he needs something grand. Hm…..maybe a new watch? Hmm….

[And suddenly, her eyes light up!]

Oh, I know! What about one of those old wooden pipes? You know, the ones people used to smoke with? I think he’d look really cool and full of authority – like those old bosses sitting in offices, sitting at their desks, smoking their pipes and looking completely lost in thought! How about it, guys?!

Third Person: Athena took a few deep breaths and stepped into the courtroom. She may have been so excited to get her hearing abilities and Widget from the landlord back so she could use them in the courtroom, but she still could not help but be nervous.

“Okay, Athena. Deep breaths. C’mon!” she whispered to herself while glancing at her reflection in the mirror in the defendant’s lobby. Why was she still nervous? Simon had been acquitted. He was a free man. She had finally managed to save him! So why…?

Still, Athena had only successfully won one trial. And that was when Apollo was helping her. The second time she tried to lead a trial, she was on her own and she did not get far before she went into one of her panic attacks and Phoenix had to take over. Not that Athena minded her boss replacing her as the lead defense but she felt that she should try and take on more trials on her own. To make her boss, Apollo, Trucy and Simon proud.
Could she do it….?

Y-yeah, I can do this! she thought, trying to console herself. Can I….?

Suddenly, as Athena gazed back at the mirror, she saw the defendant, her ‘husband’, giving her a wave and a smile. Athena opened her mouth in surprise. Her pseudo-spouse may not have said anything but she could tell in his heart….he had faith in her.

Athena blushed a little before immediately covering it up and turning to her ‘husband’, giving him a peace sign and a huge grin.

“All right, Mr. Husband, the trial’s about to start – let’s go. Rapido!”

OTHER;
Housing Request?: With Gregory Edgeworth? The mun didn't put it down when she apped but she and I have discussed it just now and she's fine with it. As far as I know, Greg hasn't been accepted into the game yet so he doesn't have a housing number.
Did you read the rules and FAQ?:Yes!
